Guests form their judgement at the door: the smell of the hallway, the bathroom mirror, the kitchen bin, and whether the bed looks hotel-made. Those four things carry more review weight than anything behind a cupboard door.

Build your changeover so those items are done last, after the dust and floors, and photograph them at handover.

The single biggest cause of a failed changeover on the Fife coast is laundry logistics. With only one set of linen, a delayed wash becomes a late check-in.

Hold at least two full sets per bed in shoulder season and three in July and August, or use a hired hotel-linen rotation so a clean set always arrives with the cleaner.

Tea, coffee, milk, loo roll, hand soap, dishwasher tablets, bin bags. Keep a locked owner's cupboard on site with a par level written on the shelf so your cleaner can restock without asking.

Airbnb and Booking.com claims are far easier to win with time-stamped photos from the changeover. Ask your cleaner for a short damage and inventory note every visit, even when it says 'all fine'.

Demand in Elie, Anstruther, Crail and St Monans is heavily concentrated between Easter and October, with the Open and golf events spiking St Andrews prices separately.

Lock in your cleaner's Saturday slot before March. By May the good changeover teams in the East Neuk are full.
